There's no denying the fact that I love playing live and the one man shows have, for the last 20 or so years, been a major part of my on-stage world… This tour was the very last one man show tour of America and indeed as I write this, tonight will be the very last one here in the USA.
I'd be lying if I said that this last tour has been easy, because it hasn't. Thankfully I have a wonderful team around me with Erik Jordan and Bobby Sepulveda, (and for the last few days New York John). They have made the tour successful and have worked above and beyond the call of duty dealing with appalling routing, incredibly long journeys with little or no sleep and on a lesser scale, hotels that have no restaurant or even somewhere to have a basic breakfast and on one occasion no rooms at all as they had sold them to other people!! Well done to Erik, Bobby and NYJ who, without them, the tour would almost certainly have collapsed.
In the middle of the tour, was the Cruise to the Edge… I played two shows, plus a great fun Q&A and wait for it… judging a cape competition!!!... where i brought in son Adam to help choose the winners as there were so many to choose from, and some of them were really fabulous. It was great to meet up with friends old and new.
All the venues on the tour made us very welcome although, and not their fault, some of the pianos were pretty grim. I am coming back to America with Hayley Sanderson in July and that will just be with a grand piano and her singing, so here's hoping the promoters realise how crucial a good piano is to the show.
This show will not have the pressure on the hands that the one man show has as I will not be playing "flat out" all the time… and it will be interesting for me to see the difference it makes as regarding the pain level. It's also an opportunity to perform songs and other music that rarely gets heard. A very short tour, but very different.
I have to say that I have always enjoyed doing the one man shows and have tried to listen to what people would like to hear and the inclusion of keyboards as well as the piano certainly added a new definition. Sadly, the way that the tours have been put together has not improved and the same mistakes have continued to be made. Having said all that, I have loved every minute of being on stage and visiting some really beautiful venues in towns, some of which I'd never heard of, but have been so happy I've discovered them.
So, to finish off, thanks to everybody who has come to see one of the shows and thank you so much for the incredibly warm receptions you have given me. You are the reason I keep performing and making music.
